Behind the scenes at Lazy Bear

If you are one of the five Inside Scoop readers who hasn’t heard, the Chronicle relaunched our Food + Home section this week with a humongous, colorful new section. Here are a few of the highlights — check out the e-edition (free to all this week) if you’d like to read more.

  • The Review:  Speaking of relaunches, Mr. Bauer reviews Archetype, the new iteration of French Blue up in St. Helena. And it’s much better.

Backen’s changes are luring people back, and Zetts is crafting a more complex and elaborate menu that brings together his skill and the specialness of the Napa Valley.

  • The FeatureJonathan Kauffman writes about Lazy Bear, a five-year-old underground restaurant with a mailing list of 20,000 and every intention of going legit in its forthcoming brick-and-mortar incarnation.
  • Wine: Jon Bonné writes about California Albariño, a Spanish varietal that has settled well in our fair state:

Albariño is an odd little grape, old as the hills but mostly guarding the home front in its native Galicia, in the damp Atlantic chill. Let Chardonnay and Riesling wander the continents. Albariño decided to stay home.

In doing so, an obscure little grape became one of the great successes of Spanish wine.

  • Visual Feature: Sarah Fritsche writes about ICE CREAM. Also, you are what you eat.
  • In the Kitchen: Amanda Gold stands at the shoulder of Farmstead’s Stephen Barber, who shows us how to make his famous ribs. (If you’re a Chron subscriber, watch the video online.)
  • Home Design: Nic Weinstein of Homestead Apothecary gives advice on herbs worth cultivating.
  • Seasonal: Lynne Char Bennett offers up two new treatments for corn on the cob.
  • Urban Forager: Snacks you should take on your next hike.
  • Plus…Celia Sack of Omnivore Books tells you where she’s eating, Miriam Morgan’s favorite soup dumplings, South Indian appam served plain and fancy, and more.
